THUNDER BAY -- After record attendance last year, organizers of The Hunger believe this Friday’s event is going to be the biggest one yet.

“We’re telling people that it’s the biggest extravaganza of performance and music in Thunder Bay because it happens all in six hours, all in one night,” said Renee Terpstra, development administrator for Definitely Superior Art Gallery.

The Hunger 9 happens Friday evening in eight venues in the north downtown core.

Fifty-six acts, including 45 bands and DJs will be performing live at Black Pirates Pub, Crocks, Gargoyles, A Little to the Left, the Foundry, Red Lion Smokehouse, the Sovereign Room and Hell, which is located in the lower level of 250 Park Avenue just down the hall from Definitely Superior.

One cover charge of $15 will get people into all the venues.

“It’s so much fun because people are flooding into the streets in their costumes,” said Terpstra.

“The event has evolved and increased venues over the years. I think it’s been one of the drivers in the downtown north core revitalization,” she added.

The Hunger is a great event to have some fun on Halloween and Terpstra says to come early to avoid long lineups at the venues.
And as the event being affordable and accessible to the public, it also features local talent in a variety of genres of music and performance.

“it’s a great opportunity to support the contemporary arts in Thunder Bay,” said Terpstra, noting that proceeds from the Hunger are used for arts programs.

Forty-five per cent of the gallery’s programming takes places in the community, including downtown transformation projects like the mural on the wall of the Waverley branch of the Thunder Bay Public Library.

The Hunger 9 begins at 8 p.m. Halloween night. Age of majority is required and with everyone in costume, Terpstra recommends everyone bring their ID no matter their age.
