THUNDER BAY -- The hospital is used to helping the community but now it needs help from those it serves in order to plan its next five years.

The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre's current strategic plan is done next year. With that comes a new plan and while it will use some surveys and consultation to get the community involved, CEO Andree Robichaud said the ideas people give will actually end up in the plan, more engagement than consultation.

"We're actually going to put scenarios in front of our community," she said.

The hospital board is focusing on seniors health, mental health, comprehensive clinical care, patient experience and Aboriginal health.

"That's what we'll bring to the community," Robichaud said.

The hospital completed 90 per cent of its goals in the last plan, Aboriginal health is part of the 10 per cent that get even more of a focus this time around.

"Changing culture, that takes time," she said.

Patient Family advisory council co-chair Keith Taylor said getting out of the boardroom and into the community is key to the strategic plan.

"They have a totally different experience in coming to this hospital," he said.

"We've spent the last five years engaging them basically so I think this time around we'll be a little more focused."
