THUNDER BAY – Hundreds of city children had an early opportunity to get a treat from the Easter Bunny.

People flocked to the Moose Hall on Sunday morning for the annual breakfast with the Easter Bunny, which is traditionally held on Palm Sunday.

Volunteer coordinator Kathy Bukovy said this was the 19th year the event has been held.

“People are loving this. They come every year,” she said. “We’re going to serve over 1,200 people today.”

The tables were full throughout the morning with a line of people snaking out the door waiting for a meal.

There was both a mix of long time attendees and first time participants in the audience.

Seija Makelainen, who along with her partner Jeremy Moore brought his seven-year-old daughter Bianca, was one of those at the breakfast for the first time.

“The food is really good and the kids are having fun,” she said.

“It’s a nice thing to do when it’s snowing outside.”

Makelainen added they will likely go again next year.

Bukovy said the breakfast is much more than a children’s event.

“Everybody just has fun here,” she said. “There are families that come, just kids, couples. It’s a great breakfast out and helping out for charities here in Thunder Bay.”

Bukovy said last year’s event raised more than $8,000 last year, with organizers hoping to equal that mark again.

Proceeds from this year’s event go towards charities such as Baby’s Breath, local Cystic Fibrosis chapter, Fort City Kinettes and the Boys and Girls Club.
