THUNDER BAY – a Lakehead University honours graduate helped host a special art unveiling Friday for a ceremony that kicked off this year’s convocation season.
Dr. Dominic Man-Kit Lam unveiled his work, a Nine Court Diagram painting, during a morning ceremony at the university president’s office. The work was created for the 50th anniversary of Lakehead University.
“I have created a nine court diagram, which is a symbol of the most ancient philosophy and culture of china,” said Lam, the alumni and 2015 honorary degree recipient. “This is the basis of Chinese philosophy, whether one is a Buddhist house or Confucius they all use this basis.
“Then I insert in the middle Da Vinci because this is a university and an integrated university so I think it is important that a university excels in a number of fields, just like Da Vinci has and have an impact for future generations.”
Dr. Lam began his post-secondary education at Lakehead University, he received a city scholarship to Lakehead and became one of the first international students.
Dr. Lam said he wanted to show his appreciation for what Lakehead has done for him during his formative years at the school by presenting Lakehead with his work.
Dr. Lam, is a world-renowned eye specialist, doctor, inventor, philanthropist and artist.
He said he hopes that in the future he will be able to auction off his paintings, in order to raise money for scholarships and other uses for the university.
