THUNDER BAY -- A local food guide aims to make eating local as easy as possible.

Now in its eight edition, Get Fresh Thunder Bay features more than 30 shops, farms and restaurants producing local food. Thunder Bay District Health Unit public health nutritionist Catherine Schwartz-Mendez said it's the go to guide for local eating from where to go to why to do it.

"It's important from the health unit's perspective because it tends to be healthier food more fruits and vegetables, more fresher food. So beyond the economic and environmental benefits of local food, it's also healthier," she said.

Slate River Dairy, which even makes its own yogurt, and Both Hands Wood-Fired Pizzeria and Bakery are the guide's new entries this year.

The Food Action Network will also be hosting canning workshops at the Regional Food Distribution Association Aug. 11 and 18.
