THUNDER BAY -- The Christmas magic returned to the city Thursday evening with the CP Holiday Train rolling into town.

Normally around this time of year it's well below the freezing mark, but with milder temperatures, hundreds gathered to share in the train's 17th annual trip around Canada.

It began the trek to Thunder Bay Thursday morning, from Mobert, Ont., stopping at various points along the way.

The train is one of two making the rounds to cities and towns across the country. The 12 boxcars were decked out with lights and festive swag, along with a concert stage.

Among the festivities, a live performance by Canadian artists Kelly Prescott and Devin Cuddy.

The train aims to raise more than $1 million and about 300,000 pounds of food along the way.

All donations stay local, and this year $13,000 was raised for the Thunder Bay RFDA.

The train's next stop is Friday in Ignace.
