Lucius Larrett had the best seat in the house for Saturday night’s annual Parade of Lights.

The nine-year-old got to ride shotgun with Thunder Bay Police Association president Gregg Stephenson, who led more a collection of 75 or so colourfully lit trucks along the Intercity-area route, helping to collect thousands of dollars for a quartet of local children’s charities.

Last year’s event raised more than $20,600 for Autism Ontario, the George Jeffrey Children’s Centre, Special Olympics Ontario and the Thunder Bay Therapeutic Riding Association. All four charities were back on board again in 2015.

Lucius said he loved every minute of his time as parade marshal.

“It’s awesome and it feels great,” he said. “You get to ride in trucks and there are lots of lights. And you get to give out candy canes.”

He was amazed at all the work that went into each and every truck.

“I think they’re cool because the lights, they’re so magnificent and they’re so beautiful,” he said.

Stephenson said it was a magical night.

“It’s four great local charities and this is something to help them out,” he said, before leading the parade down Main Street.

Thousands of people lined the street to watch. Even Stephenson was a little surprised at just how many people turned out.

“It’s phenomenal and this year, especially with the weather. But even when it’s cold, people come out in droves and they look forward to this. It’s not necessarily the kickoff to Christmas, but it’s one of the signs that Christmas is coming,” Stephenson said.

“I’ve been driving the lead vehicle for a few years and it’s phenomenal to see the number of people who are out.”
