THUNDER BAY -- Water games at Prince Arthur’s Landing amused children while they learned at the kickoff for World Water Week on Sunday.

Live turtles were on display along with microscopes and other games to illustrate the importance of local keeping water clean.

“Lake Superior is the largest surface water freshwater in the world,” explained Gail Willis, Thunder Bay’s senior technologist and chair of the local Earth Care Water Working Group.

“I think it’s important that people of Thunder Bay recognize that and that they keep it clean and make sure it’s protected.”

That more serious message was aimed at adults with booths representing local political action over safe drinking water and demonstrations on how to limit water runoff and erosion in urban yards.

“We would like to keep our waters clean by making sure no pollution gets in our storm drains,” Willis said.

“We can try to keep our water on our property and keep it on the source.”

World Water Day lands on Mar. 22.
