Sadie Cameron’s family connection to Fort McMurray inspired her to help the Albertan community that finds itself in the middle of devastating wild fires.

As of Thursday, the Grade 7 student started collecting clothing donations from students and teachers at Claude Garton public school.

Cameron’s father who is temporarily living in Fort McMurray has witnessed phenomenal damage and has had some loss himself. This is what led Sadie to ask for help from her school mates.

“They’ve lost their homes and everything,” she said. “They have to start fresh and I just felt like giving them some clothes.”

The clothing drive started in her classroom, however, word quickly spread throughout the school.

Within 24 hours Cameron managed to collect 10 recycling bags filled with clothing and other supplies.

“I never thought anything like this would ever happen, I just thought the class would collect a few things and my dad could bring it back to Fort McMurray and hand them out to the people who need help.”

The school will be collecting donations until Cameron’s father goes back to Fort McMurray.

French immersion teacher Tanya Gouthro said she couldn’t begin to imagine the devastation and the loss the community is feeling.

“We are just trying to help people get clothing, toys that kind of thing to get them from one day to the next right now,” she said.

“If this is any indication of what we will be collecting I think we are going to have a lot to give.”

The school has also decided to donate $250 worth of pizza funds to Redcross.
