June 22, 2016, THUNDER BAY, ON – Chris Cartwright, Past President of the Student Union of Confederation College (SUCCI) recently received the Bronze Student Leadership Excellence Award from Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan).

The award is presented to a student leader who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, while making an exceptional contribution within their institution and the communities it serves. Cartwright was nominated by Jim Madder, President of Confederation College.

“Chris is an exemplary leader and is very deserving of this award,” said Madder.

“He has been a strong advocate of student life at Confederation College, and has focused on ensuring our growing Indigenous and international student populations are fully integrated in campus activities. He has had a tremendous impact on our institution and we thank and congratulate him for all he has achieved in his tenure as SUCCI President.”

Cartwright served as President of SUCCI for two consecutive year-long terms which concluded in May. Prior to that he served on the board as the Director of Residence life. He is a graduate of the Broadcasting – Television Production program at Confederation College. Throughout his time with SUCCI, Cartwright was a hands-on leader, contributing to many student-led initiatives and events.

He passionately advocated for student mental health, established new programs supporting campus sustainability and healthy student lifestyles, and represented students on a variety of College and community committees. He also advocated for the student voice at local and provincial levels, some of which was done alongside the College Student Alliance, a collective advocacy group representing the interests of college students studying in Ontario.

Cartwright provided guidance to his Board of Directors, leading the group to influence academic policies and to host many sporting and social networking events on campus. Of particular significance was Cartwright’s efforts to commit an $8.5 million student contribution towards the development of a new Student Wellness Centre. Beyond his work at the Confederation, Cartwright has also been an active volunteer in the Thunder Bay community.

“I was very excited when President Madder informed me that I had won the CICan award,” said Cartwright.

“To receive recognition at a national level provides a fantastic closure to my time as SUCCI President. My work with SUCCI has always been about collaboration and building a great team to get the job done. This award should be shared with everyone at the College and in particular the long-time staff administrators at SUCCI, as I would not have earned this award without their encouragement and support.”

That support was easily given to someone with Cartwright’s leadership abilities, character and enthusiasm.

“We couldn’t be more proud of Chris for all that he has accomplished for SUCCI, Confederation College and beyond,” said Lynne Savela, Executive Director of SUCCI. “Chris leaves behind an important legacy and we know he will continue to have a positive impact in our region.”
