Musical talent will be flooding Chippewa Park this summer with a variety of musical performances.

The popular Sundays in the Park concert series kicked off Sunday afternoon as dozens of spectators took to Chippewa’s main stage to hear the acoustic medleys of Thunder Bay’s One Floor Down.

Every Sunday, rain or shine, from July 3 to Sept. 4, the park will host musical performances.

Friends of Chippewa Secretary Ian Angus said Chippewa’s summer events give people the opportunity to sit in the natural environment and enjoy some local entertainment.

“Everybody keeps coming back,” Angus said. “They really enjoy it, they look forward to the concerts – it’s great fun for families of all ages.”

Angus added that free jam sessions will be featured every Tuesday night during July and August.

A range of local musicians and singers will take the stage starting July 5.

“It’s free, it’s really good entertainment,” he said.

Performers Rob McLeod Capital Players will return to the park again starting in July with a new melodrama called A Beaver’s Tale or the One Wee Wife of Wes Fort.

The play will be presented Sundays at 4 p.m. and Thursdays at 7 p.m.

“People are always looking for things to do. There’s a lot of people that don’t have places to go in the summer and Chippewa provides them with that opportunity,” Angus said.

“A lot of times people think of Chippewa as a place to take the kids, well it’s a place where you go as an adult and a senior as well whether it’s walking through the park and the trails or listening to music it’s a great place to go.”

He added that the summer events are a way to celebrate the existence of Chippewa and the role it has played within the community for almost 100 years.
