July 28, 2016, Thunder Bay, ON – This week, 11 participants have been learning new photography tricks and techniques as part of Beat the Heat with Photo Week, a Career Sampler camp designed for students in grades 6-12.

Students have spent their time getting acquainted with photography software and applications, learning how to use the features of their digital cameras and mobile phones, and setting up their perfect shots.

“Given that camps for youth in grades 6-12 are hard to find, Confederation College’s Career Samplers are a unique and interesting way to introduce students to the college experience,” said Shelley Leeson, the Career Sampler Coordinator.

“It’s a great opportunity for youth to learn new skills and experience future career options in areas related to college programs, in this case, within media arts. It also gives them a chance to explore campus.”

Specifically, students have been learning the basics of photography, the latest photography techniques and the elements of composition, such as lighting and different ways to frame their subjects.

Ultimately, these skills will help them take their social media photos and selfies to a whole new level. And of course, the camp could even inspire a career, just like it has for Corrie Marin, a student from St. Ignatius High School. She enjoyed last year’s Beat the Heat with Photo Week camp so much that she came back this year to learn more.

“I met a lot of people during last year’s camp and our instructor made it really fun and interesting, so I decided to come back again,” she said.

Even though Marin is interested in turning photography into a career, she pointed out that there is no experience necessary to participate in the camp. “It’s not difficult for anyone to take; if you like taking pictures, you’ll love this camp.” Marin’s favourite part of the camp has been shooting outdoors on the College’s campus and learning how to take beautiful pictures of nature.

The Beat the Heat with Photo Week camp will wrap up this Friday, July 29th. For more information about Confederation College’s Career Samplers program, visit www.confederationc.on.ca/career-samplers.
