THUNDER BAY – Motors and Muscles just keeps getting bigger and better.

There’ll be plenty of new and old favourites at the 11th annual event in support of Our Kids Count, being staged Aug 27 and 28 in conjunction with Rib Fest in Thunder Bay’s downtown north core.

Several new events have been incorporated into Motors and Muscles in 2016, including the Taranais Excavator Rodeo on Red River Road, the 3Ride BMX competition, the Lakehead Radio Control Car Club races and the Equipment World strongman competition.

That’s just Saturday.

Slated for Sunday are the Red River Rumble and Thunder Bay the Lake motorcycle and car shows.
And both days feature special appearance by Ryan Evans, from the History Channel’s Counting Cars.

“This is our fifth year that we’ve joined with Rib Fest,” said event chairman John Trevisanutto on Thursday, adding they’ve raised $150,000 over the past four years alone.

Joining forces with Rib Fest has been a huge boost to their efforts, Trevisanutto said.

“People just love it. They’re now at the point where they’re waiting for it to happen and it just makes sense for Motors and Muscles to couple with them. People love all the activities,” he said.

“The car show was new last year. The bike show’s in its fourth year. A lot of people like to come down and see what Thunder Bay has to offer in terms of cars and motorcycles.”

Brad Scott of 3Ride BMX, says they’ve held smaller bike rodeos in Thunder Bay, but this will be the first standalone of its size.

“We’re calling it the Downtown Takeover. It’s a BMX street competition. There’s going to be ramps and jumps and rails and ledges all set up on Red River Road for local BMX riders to showcase their talent,” Scott said.

“It’s super cool. We’ve wanted to do it in Thunder Bay for a long time.”

The event kicks off on Aug. 27 at noon, with registration beginning at 10 a.m. and proceeds to benefit the charity of choice.

That’s music to the ears of Our Kids Count’s executive director Gladys Berringer.

“Motors to Muscles is our largest fundraiser. We are so grateful for all the sponsors and people that put the event together. It provides about half of what we need to raise for the year, so we really rely on this event to do what we do in the community.”

The charity aims to help individuals build stronger families and inclusive communities through personal growth and development though pre- and post-natal support, community kitchens and parenting programs and workshops.

Admission is free for spectators.
