THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay Boys and Girls club celebrated the end of summer Wednesday.

Drivers going down Junot Street ended up slowing down, not for a speed trap, but to see the giant Remax balloon giving rides to attendees at the 26th annual Boys and Girls Club open house.

Despite the forecast for rain this week the sun shone through to give kids like Justin Townson a chance of a lifetime.

“It wasn’t that scary,” Townson said. “You just go a few metres in the air, and the only thing that scares you is the sound and the heat.”

“It got on the back of my neck and it was really hot.”

Executive Director Albert Aiello said they had to bump the open house ahead by a week to include the balloon in the festivities.

“It’s our way of ending the summer, and we start promoting our fall programming,” Aiello said.

Other events available for the kids to try out was a dunk tank, a bouncy castle and obstacle course, outdoor and indoor climbing walls, and games, arts and crafts for those wanting to hang out indoors.

The club here in Thunder Bay has been running since 1971, and many of its pupils have formed friendships.
