An ER doctor testified Monday that OPP Sgt. Darryl Storey told her he did not see Jasmine Veneruzzo’s car pull onto Highway 11/17 until the last minute.
Storey was charged with criminal negligence causing death in connection with a December 2008 crash that claimed the life of 18-year-old Veneruzzo.
Last Wednesday paramedic James Frizado testified he heard Storey tell the doctor he was testing an unmarked OPP cruiser he had just picked up from being serviced for a steering issue on Dec. 3, 2008.
Storey allegedly said he was driving the car at top speed – 210 kilometres per hour. When he saw Veneruzzo’s yellow Sunfire pull onto the highway from Twin City Crossroads, he braked and then the two vehicles collided.
Physician Sunny Twelker told the court Monday when she was asking Storey for details on the crash in order to treat his injuries, he told her he was travelling at “highway speed” at the moment of impact.
Twelker said Storey had told her he was testing the vehicle after getting it back from maintenance and was driving at a speed of more than 200 kilometres per hour. When he saw the car he reduced his speed.
He also stated he did not see the vehicle that intercepted him until the last minute, Twelker testified.
Twelker also told the court that Storey had been released from the hospital after 4 p.m. the day of the incident and sustained minor injuries.
Twelker testified that SIU officers approached her on Dec. 23 asking for information not in the medical report.
They said there may have been utterances in the trauma room by the patient and that’s what they were interested in.
Twelker’s testimony was the last of the Crown’s civilian testimony.
The trial continues Tuesday.
