Job market expected to heat up soon: Survey

The area’s job market could be heating up soon.

That's according to a recent Manpower employment outlook survey that shows the Thunder Bay and region can expect significant gains in transportation, public utilities, and construction in the next quarter.

Employers say the majority of the jobs being created will be full-time.

General Manager of Manpower Ontario, Florentine Bahlieda, says that indicates an active hiring pace in the coming months.

Bahlieda adds that she expects to see a boom in the Thunder Bay market throughout the rest of the year.

Glad to hear that.
Chronical Journal is quite depressing if one is looking for work anywhere in the region.
Not sure where these jobs are going to come from. Bring it on.
Cause man does this area ever need it.

I have a family member that recently moved back to Thunder Bay that says the complete opposite of what you're saying. She said that she couldn't believe how many jobs that are available in Thunder Bay. I also continuously maintain an open eye on the job market in Thunder Bay just to see what's going on. While the Chronicle Journal may not show much, try the job bank online, as well as workopolis, and other online sites. You will be quite surprised!

Interesting. Construction a.k.a. building; How insightful that Confederation College suspended the program that prepares graduates for these jobs.

SomeGuy says:
They suspended Architectural Technology, there is still Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Automation and Controls, Electrical Engineering and a host of other programs that relate to the construction industry.

Thank you for that clarification SomeGuy. I was unaware that those programs prepared grads to work in design/build offices; which is a goal I believe of the local industry as advertised on a prominent Ft Wm Rd billboard- Design and Build Local.
Oh, that's right, those programs do not fully prepare grads for design/build work as did Arch Tech; but then, why confuse fact with semi-informed opinion such as yours;

On the Con College website they are saying the next round of admittance is happening in 2014.

The college will suspend programs while they retool the curriculum, they've done it for several other courses.

Really? 2014....? What does the retool look like SomeGuy? Please provide all the significant details. I'm especially interested to know the benefits of "retooling" compared to the original program.

Well of course there are going to be a lot of construction jobs. It's going to be construction season soon. DUH@!

Sadly there won't be any other real jobs available. This city is still dying.

is your whole life this negative or just on this site.

if this was a story bashing something you would be all for it. it is all you know.

But let me help you.

The city is dying. everyone is leaving

a booming housing market for the past 4 years, is all just an illusion. record car sales, just a dream. 1200 more people working at bombardier, fantasy. hundreds more at the hospital, a pipedream. potential for hundreds more connected to mining. not possible cause it didn't happen today.

have I captured your coffee shop opinion, which is accurate because most of your opinions are worth about a $1.60

For a $1.60 I don't have to deal with 'semi-moderated'.

And it is worth every penny.

Maybe they should let the students out a month earlier and call them back a month later, to help out back home for the summer, on all the local family farms.

Arch Grad says:
Dear Fan
Before you accuse someone of uniformed opinions I think you should know that the College suspended the Architectural Tech course because of low enrollment not because of the job market. you can't teach students that aren't there. until now getting jobs as an Archtectural tech. has not been that easy in this city. I hope that improves. I might point out that there have been lots of jobs for Civil Eng. techs and I am sure that will continue as they put roads up to the Ring of Fire

fan says:
Low enrolment? What exactly is low enrolment? Is it 20 students or 22 students..or, ??? Is this number the only factor considered in offering an otherwise excellent program that consistently prepares graduates for future employment? Or is this number used to justify a "retool" to accommodate students who wish to have a 6 week crash course so they can return to their homeland?
As for the placement rate, check your facts. There may be more than a few reasons why you have not succeeded in getting a job as the placement rate for the program is excellent.
