The district’s health unit is confirming that five people in this area have died from influenza,

Thunder Bay District Health Unit, however, cannot confirm whether H1N1 is responsible for two of the most recent flu-related deaths.

The Health Unit’s  infectious disease program manager, Diana Gowanlock, said four adults, under the age of 65, and one senior have died. But an investigation over the latest two victims, which she learned of this afternoon, hasn't confirmed H1N1 in particular or whether they had received flu shots.

Gowanlock said it's preferable that people get their shot earlier in the season but there's still time.

"It's never too late," she said.

Gowanlock hopes that the cases of H1N1, which have been hitting people under the age of 65 in particular, will start to decline in the coming weeks.

For those who opt out of a flu shot, everything from washing hands to staying home if ill can help prevent the spread of the flu Gowanlock said.
