The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has confirmed another person has died an influenza-related death, raising the total number of deaths to six.

All told 93 people have been diagnosed with lab-confirmed cases of the deadly disease. Health unit officials are encouraging the public to get flu shots, reminding them it’s never too late.

Shots are available at health-care providers, at local pharmacies and also at the health unit, by appointment only, on Wednesdays between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The public can also take other steps to prevent the disease, starting with clean hands, washed for at least 15 seconds with soap and warm water or by using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

The remind people to cover coughs and sneezes and to stay at home if sick to avoid spreading infections to others.

The health unit also confirmed on Wednesday that a respiratory outbreak last Friday at Lakehead Manor has been confirmed to be Influenza A and visitor restrictions remain in place at the facility.
