City police have lost one of their own.

The flags at the Balmoral Street police station were lowered to half mast Friday to honour former police service dog Thunder, who died Thursday morning.

"Due to the deterioration of his health, with the aid of his dedicated veterinarian, he passed quietly this morning with Cst. (Joe) Prevet and family at his side," said a statement on the

Thunder Bay Police Service's Facebook page.

"He will be missed!" it read.

Thunder retired from active duty in December and had been on the job since August 2005 with Prevett as his partner.

He had an exceptional career with the force with a success rate of 70 per cent. A typical success rate for police dogs is around 30 per cent.

At the time of Thunder's retirement, Prevet called him the best partner he ever had.

Thunder lived out his retirement with Prevet, who will be meeting and training a new canine partner this spring.
