Survival gear helps family survive weekend in the wilderness

By tbnewswatch.com

KENORA, Ont. -- A family has been located safely after spending three nights stranded in the Trapline Lake area, provincial police confirmed Tuesday.

Officials with the OPP say officers from the Kenora detachment of the police force learned that a local pilot had located a family of four, including two children aged six and 10, on Monday. The pilot was contacted by the family members after the four failed to return home as expected on Jan. 25.

Police say the family left Kenora on Saturday, Jan. 18 to spend a week trapping north of Minaki in the area of Wingiskis Lake.

On their return trip on Jan. 24, they had mechanical problems with one snow machine. Their other snow machine later became stuck.

With survival gear, the family managed to construct a shelter and light a fire. They had enough food to survive until Monday.

The OPP is using the incident to remind the public of the importance of having the proper survival gear and telling people about your expected return when venturing out into the wilderness.
