Officials with the Thunder Bay District Humane Society confirmed Tuesday that the dog died during weekend surgery.

Two people were arrested after officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service responded to a report of a possible animal cruelty case on Wednesday, Jan. 23. Police began their investigation at a May Street apartment and later arrested a 31-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman.

A dog and a cat were turned over to Animal Services.

In an earlier statement to media, police said the dog, a Rottweiler mix, was in stable condition at a city veterinarian hospital. The animal was said to be very thin, emaciated and had significant trauma-related injuries.

The cat was said to be in good condition.
