Transportation Minister offers tough talk on lack of highway snow clearing

Ontario's Transportation Minister is acknowledging that some highways have not been properly snowplowed and cleared this winter.

Ontario's Transportation Minister is acknowledging that some highways have not been properly snowplowed and cleared this winter.

Minister Glen Murray issued a statement after the MTO imposed financial penalties against all of its private highway maintenance contractors this winter.

The ministry has refused to release the amount of those fines,  but Murray says he takes the safety of Ontario's highways very seriously and they will take stronger action if significant improvements are not forthcoming.

The private contractors added 50 more plows to their fleets this winter.

Murray insists the MTO has taken action whenever winter maintenance standards haven't been met.

The minister is also encouraging all drivers to contact the ministry by email whenever they have concerns about the amount of snowplowing, salting or sanding being done on the highways.
