Ontario Liberals propose wage freeze for MPPs

By tbnewswatch.com

Ontario’s Liberal government plans to introduce a bill to freeze MPP wages.

The freeze would mean MPP wages would remains unchanged until at least 2019, and it’s something MPP Bill Mauro (Lib., Thunder Bay - Atikokan) says he supports.

Calling it a good example to set, the Thunder Bay area representative says it is a small gesture to help combat Ontario’s deficit.

“I would point out the the federal government and their (MPs) are not doing the same things,” Mauro said during a phone interview with CKPR Radio Wednesday. “And obviously they’ve been in a deficit for a very long time as well.”

The proposed freeze would block a scheduled increase that’s set for April 1.

Opposition parties are criticizing the move, calling it a distraction to a poor financial record. The opposition at Queen’s Park is also critical of the government’s timing, considering there is a possibility of a spring election.
