Dryden votes to withhold MPAC payment for second year in a row

The city of Dryden still harbours resentment towards the Municipal Property and Assessment Corporation.

The city of Dryden still harbours resentment towards the Municipal Property and Assessment Corporation.

For the second consecutive year Dryden city council has voted to withold $25,000 in payment to MPAC, arguing the city was inadequately represented in their property assessment value hearings against the Domtar Mill.

The value of the Domtar Mill was decreased from $51 million down to $14 million, with the municipality ordered to refund the company $5.4 million in taxes collected between 2009 and 2012.

Dryden mayor Craig Nuttall has argued that MPAC is not representing the best interests of the communities, even though they are forced to hire the property assessment corporation to represent them.

The city is holding the payments from the last two years in a trust and Nuttall admitted they will eventually be forced to pay.
