Council of Canadians rally against proposed Energy East Pipeline

By tbnewswatch.com

Two weeks after the first local meetings over the proposed Energy East Pipeline, the Council of Canadians is mobilizing supporters to stir up resistance to the project.

About two dozen members of the group staged a protest on the Brown Street pedestrian overpass thursday morning. The rally was led by Council of Canadians chair, Maude Barlow, who was in Thunder Bay for several events surrounding the Energy East proposal.

On Wednesday night about 300 people attended a panel lecture at the Lakehead Labour Centre regarding the project. The Council is critical of the plan that would convert a natural gas line to carry crude oil from the oil sands to refineries on the East Coast for export.

Barlow says Energy East is the fossil fuel industry's desperate ploy to export as much oil from Alberta as possible, before the world turns to alternative energy generation.

Barlow sees potential for Northern Ontario to replicate the popular resistance that has held up Keystone XL and stood in the way of the Northern Gateway Pipeline.
