Legal challenge to spring bear hunt begins

By tbnewswatch.com

TORONTO  -- The Liberal government's move to bring back the spring bear hunt in a pilot project was challenged in court Tuesday.

That challenge comes just before the projects planned start on Thursday. The Animal Alliance of Canada and Zoocheck Canada is challenging the hunt, saying mother bears will be killed and their orphaned cubs left to starve or be killed by predators.

The two groups have filed an application for judicial review and say they hope the court will at least delay the start of the hunt until it can rule on its legal actions.

The pilot project to reinstate the spring bear hunt is slated to begin May 1 and run for six weeks in eight wildlife areas, including Thunder Bay.
