GULL BAY FIRST NATION, Ont. -- The chief of Gull Bay First Nation has declared a state of emergency.

With limited access to the community after the washout of Highway 527, Chief Wilfred King made the official declaration at about 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

Gull Bay is dependent upon weather conditions for supplies to be flown in or people in need of medical care flown out via Ornge air ambulance.

“I asked some hypotheticals about what happens in a situation if there is a serious injury and nobody really had any answers,” King said. “There is still no real access to the community via road and we’re still trying to get medication and other types of items across.”

The highway was closed on Wednesday following a washout that led to a fatal crash nearly one kilometre south of the Kab River Bridge. An individual injured at the scene just prior to the fatal crash had to be transferred to the Armstrong Nursing Station on a four-wheel drive vehicle down a bush road.

The highway was expected to reopen on Friday, but it still remains closed.

King expects the state of emergency declaration to remain in effect until the highway is reopened.
