THUNDER BAY -- A north-side family escaped their home without injury after a smoke alarm alerted them to an early morning fire.

About 22 firefighters responded to the fire at a Blucher Avenue home just after 2 a.m. Monday.

Platoon Chief Joe Grzelewski confirmed that the residents reported the fire after being woken up by their smoke alarms.

“We attended the scene and were able to put the fire out fairly quickly,” Grzelewski said in an interview with CKPR Radio. “The home did suffer some extensive smoke damage and some fire damage as well.”

Firefighters finished their investigation early Monday afternoon, and say the cause of the fire will remain undetermined.
