THUNDER BAY -- The preliminary hearing for a man accused of murder began Monday at the Thunder Bay Courthouse.

Jeffrey Morris Kakegamic, 33, was charged with second-degree murder and two counts of breach of probation in connection with the death of Martin Fabian Achneepineskum.

The preliminary hearing is scheduled for two weeks with the Crown expected to call around 20 witnesses.

Evidence discussed during the preliminary hearing is protected by a publication ban.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers, on Dec. 2, 2012, say they responded to a call about a man being attacked within a residence in the 200 block of McIntyre Street around 3:25 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers found an injured Achneepineskum, 48, who was taken to hospital where he died a short time later.

Police said the two Thunder Bay men knew each other and alcohol was a factor.

The charges against the accused have not been tested in court.
