THUNDER BAY -- The biomass project at Confederation College has a new backer.

The college announced earlier this week the new facility will be known as the Ontario Power Generation Bio-Energy Learning and Research Centre, with the provincial power authority agreeing to a five-year partnership.

The multi-year collaboration will see Ontario Power Generation contribute $500,000 over the five years towards the continued development of the centre.

The biomass will be used to provide 80 per cent of the required heat to the Shuniah and REACH building during the upcoming winter.

The main boiler house will feature a "living labratory" where different sources of urban forest waste will be measured for its effectiveness. The boiler will be made available both for the students and faculty for demonstration, training and applied research as was as to industry professionals.

The long-term purpose of the project is to develop a strategy for remote northern First Nations that rely on imported diesel fuel to use more available sources to power their communities.

The college had previously received a $100,000 grant from the TD Bank Group to aid the first phase of the project.

Confederation College is working together with Lakehead University and North Bay’s Nipissing University on the endeavour.
