THUNDER BAY - A South side community centre has re-opened with help from its remaining board members and city staff.
The West Thunder Community Centre was shut down after five board members and its president resigned in June facing pressure from its 700 members when a cafe inside the Edward Street community hub closed.
The cafe started a trial run in April but then board president Beatrice Metzler said it wasn't financially viable.
A petition calling for the board's resignation had already been signed by more than half the membership when she and the five members stepped down.
The doors were then locked until further notice, canceling some events.
But on Tuesday the city re-opened the building saying it will operate with the three remaining board members and help from city staff until a new board can be elected.
Westfort Coun. Joe Virdiramo said scheduled programming at West Thunder will now be able to go ahead.
"We're attempting to honour those bookings and carry on," Virdiramo said.
"We felt it was in the community's best interest that we facilitate the reopening."
Virdiramo said a new board could be elected as early as next month.
