THUNDER BAY -- A city trail has been closed for repairs before it even officially opened.

The first phase of major reconstruction to Golf Links wrapped up at more than $7.8 million. The work included a fitness trail along the West side of the road. Part of that trail was washed away due to rain, which now needs more erosion protection.

"We believe it's strictly natural causes," city project engineer Rick Harms said. "It was our first experience after the trail was built with some rainfall events."

More protection will also be needed along some of the embankments of the road itself after an asphalt emulsion was eroded.

"It's been determined that that's not quite stable enough," Harms said.

All of it is considered extra work to the original contract.

Harms figures it could be up to $40,000 for the additional work, which will be done by original contractor.
