Process to shift taxicab authority taking longer than expected

THUNDER BAY – Revamping the city’s taxicab industry has taken longer than expected.

THUNDER BAY – Revamping the city’s taxicab industry has taken longer than expected.

For nearly the past year a committee has been examining issues facing the industry in the city, including shifting responsibility for overseeing taxi regulations from the police services board over to the city.

The city solicitor and by-law manager have been working on re-writing a new bylaw that would provide the legal framework for the transfer. A first draft is expected to be completed within the first two weeks of November.

The retirement of the city’s former by-law manager and unexpected legal matters caused a delay in the process, which previously was expected to be completed by the end of the summer.

It is expected a verbal update, if not a rough draft of the new legal framework, will be presented at the next police services board meeting.

Once the proposed by-law is finished then the police services board, then city council, can vote on officially completing the shift.
