THUNDER BAY -- Windy weather is wreaking havoc on power lines across the city.

Thunder Bay Hydro crews have been kept busy throughout Saturday responding to a number of power outages caused by strong winds.

Hydro officials are dealing with what they term a “large outage” in the rural north ward. That outage runs from Mapleward Road up to Oliver Road and Government Road.

There are also a number of smaller outages in effect.

Fire officials were also dispatched to Shuniah after reports of fallen trees resting on power lines. There is a report of at least one small fire, which has been extinguished without causing significant damage.

Power was restored to the County Park area in the late morning after it had been knocked out.

The powerful winds toppled a tree onto the fairway on the sxith hole at the Strathcona Golf Course. There are also reports of many fallen trees on trails in the Centennial Park area.

Environment Canada is forecasting winds with gusts up to 70 kilometres per hour with sustained winds of about 40 kilometres per hour.
