Queen’s Park turns attention to Health Sciences Centre gridlock

TORONTO, Ont. -- Ontario’s NDP leader is calling for aid to deal with the gridlock at this region’s hospital.

TORONTO, Ont. -- Ontario’s NDP leader is calling for aid to deal with the gridlock at this region’s hospital.

Andrea Horwath said at Queen’s Park that the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre had been in a state of gridlock for nearly four consecutive months. She added that it will likely take years to resolve the issue under current funding levels.

“There have been too many patients and too few beds for more than 85 per cent of this year,” Horwath said. “Every day (the Health Sciences Centre) operates, 36 unfunded beds are being operated to meet the needs of the residents.”

Ontario Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins countered, saying the government announced $14 million for the Hospital, St. Joeseph's Care Group and the Northwest Community Care Access Centre.

Part of that funding was aimed at hiring new emergency room doctors to address the concern.
