Sandy Beach campers not expecting good news from city council

Lease-holders on Sandy Beach think they'll know whether they'll have camps and homes after a city council decision Monday.

Lease-holders on Sandy Beach think they'll know whether they'll have camps and homes after a city council decision Monday.

But the association representing more than 30 families, some with leases that go back to the 1920s, isn't holding out much hope that they city will renew those leases, set to expire at the end of the year.

Sandy Beach Lease Holders Association Chair Bob Hupka said they still haven't heard from the city, but it's expected that council has reached a decision behind closed doors and will ratify it Monday night. Hupka said the campers generate money for the city. The two parties should have been able to get together and negotiate a new lease.

"We feel this city is being run by a group of people who are both heartless and spineless," he said.

While there's a slim chance for a new lease Hupka said he expects to head to court over the issue.
