OPSEU members get set for strike vote

Nearly 35,000 members of the Ontario Public Sector Employee’s Union are preparing for a strike vote.

The collective bargaining agreement for OPSEU members is set to expire next month. Local president Sandra Snider says the union is concerned with what it sees as significant privatization of the public sector.

“We’ve shown over and over again that privatization is costing the taxpayer money, it isn’t saving it,” Snider said during an interview with CKPR Radio.

“In (Information Technology) alone it is costing them 50 per cent more to contract out. Those contracts are not on your Sunshine list and they should be. Those contractors are making more money than anyone who would have done that job in the public sector.”

Snider also says the province’s initial offer is gutting their collective agreement, and has many worried about feeding their families.

The strike vote will take place between Dec. 3 and Dec. 5 at locations across Ontario.
