Ice pellets, freezing rain and snow expected this weekend

THUNDER BAY -- Environment Canada is expecting a sloppy weekend that will feature a blend of snow, rain, ice pellets and freezing rain in and around the city.

THUNDER BAY -- Environment Canada is expecting a sloppy weekend that will feature a blend of snow, rain, ice pellets and freezing rain in and around the city.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement early Friday morning specifically for the City of Thunder Bay.

Meteorologists with the government weather agency say snow is expected to begin Friday night with two to five centimeters accumulating. After that it is expected snow will turn into ice pellets Saturday morning.

Later Saturday morning there’s a chance those ice pellets could turn into freezing rain in areas near the Lake Superior shore.

There is good news mixed in with the ugly weather -- Saturday comes with a high of 1C.

For many areas of Northern Ontario, extending from the Manitoba border near Kenora and Red Lake to the Quebec border near Little Abitibi, the forecast is a bit more consistent.

Instead of the winter cocktail expected for this city, the above mentioned areas are expected to be hit with snow Friday night into Saturday morning. About five to 10 centimetres is expected to accumulate within that timeframe.

Environment Canada meteorologists will continue to monitor the weather situation in this area and update with special weather alerts or warnings if the forecast worsens.
