THUNDER BAY -- In response to the winter spike in auto collisions, the city’s collision centre hours will be expanded.

Officials with the THunder Bay Police Service confirmed the expanded hours via a news release issued Friday. The self-reporting centre is located in the Balmoral Street police station, and the expanded hours are set to begin Dec. 1

The new hours will mean the centre opens at 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. It will open at 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The centre will remain closed on Sunday.

Motorists involved in collisions must report the incident if the combined damage is greater than $1,000 or there are injuries as a result of the crash.

These rules apply whether the collision takes place on a public road or private property.

Police warn motorists that trying to deal with minor collisions without involving police is a serious risk. If any deal between motorists “fall apart,” everyone involved may find themselves in a difficult position in terms of insurance coverage.

Police say almost all insurance companies will refuse to process a claim without a police report.

Police say they are also noticed an increasing number of people refusing to have seriously damaged vehicles towed from crash scenes.

Instead, motorists are attempting to drive the vehicles home or to the reporting centre themselves.

Police say it is against the law to drive an unsafe motor vehicle, and that would include vehicles with deployed airbags.
