THUNDER BAY -- A man convicted on drug trafficking charges was sentenced to more than nine years in prison Friday.

THUNDER BAY -- A man convicted on drug trafficking charges was sentenced to more than nine years in prison Friday.

Marcel Breton was convicted in July for possession of cocaine, marijuana and ecstasy for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a prohibited weapon and laundering proceeds of crime.

Breton was sentenced at the Thunder Bay Courthouse by Justice Terrence Platana Friday to nine-and-a-half years in prison but was given credit for three years time served.

Crown attorney Vern Brewer said he applied to have various items seized by police, including vehicles and the $1.2 million found buried on Breton’s Mapleward Road property, forfeited to the federal Crown.

The judge will make his decision on the forfeitures in the spring.

Lawyer Christopher Watkins appeared as friend of the court on behalf of Breton and said when asked if he had anything to say, Breton said “the justice system is not fair.”

Breton was arrested in December 2009 after police searched his Mapleward Road home, which resulted in the seizure of 120 grams of cocaine, 50 ecstasy tablets, 454 grams of marijuana and two grams of cannabis resin.

Along with the drugs, police also discovered $1.2 million in cash, the majority of which was found buried in the ground in a Tupperware container.
