THUNDER BAY -- An afternoon blaze in a southside home has claimed the lives of two pets.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews responded to a home on Catherine Street shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon after receiving 911 calls from neighbours who saw smoke emerging from the building.

Platoon Chief Brant Kiessig said the residents were not home at the time of the fire but two dogs did not survive.

“The fire appears to have started in the laundry room area,” Kiessig said. “The investigation is underway to try to determine the cause.”
