CRA grants Experimental Lakes full charitable status

A decision by the Canada Revenue Agency may have a major impact on the future financial stability of the Experimental Lakes Area.

A decision by the Canada Revenue Agency may have a major impact on the future financial stability of the Experimental Lakes Area.

The Canada Revenue Agency has announced that it has granted full charitable status to the International Institute for Sustainable Development.  That's the organization that runs the freshwater research facility near Kenora.

The ELA was previously run by Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

But the ELA’s future was placed in jeopardy when the federal government withdrew its support in 2012.

The government of Ontario then stepped in to help keep the ELA survive.

Institute officials say the new charitable status will help keep the research efforts viable in the long term.
