THUNDER BAY -- A busy city retail outlet had to be evacuated in the midst of the busy holiday shopping season due to higher than acceptable levels of carbon monoxide.
The Wal-Mart location in County Fair Mall on Dawson Road was evacuated early Saturday evening after a number of people inside the store reported feeling unwell.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews responded shortly after 7 p.m. when the store’s assistant manager activated the fire alarm to evacuate the building because there was believed to be a smell of natural gas.
Firefighters tested the air levels in the building and discovered there was carbon monoxide, which they believe to be a result of two gas fired heating units on the roof misfiring.
The store was then ventilated to clear out the carbon monoxide.
Nobody inside the building required any medical attention.
