THUNDER BAY -- City transit has upgraded their online bus-arrival tool so passengers can get more accurate information on when to head to the bus stop.

Thunder Bay Transit is phasing out their current NextBus website on Dec. 31 and replacing it with NextLift.ca – the beta version is available now for passengers.

Planning and market analyst Jon Hendel says the new site was built using brand new, state-of-the art equipment.

“The GPS locators are way more accurate. We’ve upgraded the equipment for the modems as well…so you can push more data quicker, faster with higher bandwidth,” he said.

The full version of the new site will be available in February and will include more passenger tools.

For now, users can access NextLift.ca on their mobile or desktop device and type in their bus stop number or what street they want to catch the bus on and it will give them all the bus options for that street.

The move to the new site is about providing customers with the most accurate information, said Hendel.

“On a really cold day, you don’t want to be standing out there if the bus has been delayed due to weather for an extra 10 minutes. So being able to check to see exactly when that bus is going to arrive at your bus stop means you’re waiting out in the cold the least amount of time,” he said.

The new system is cloud-based and Hendel said it took about a year of planning to make sure they were getting the right equipment.

“We’ve been testing it for about three months to make sure the information is accurate,” he said.
