THUNDER BAY -- Outdoor skating rinks have been taking a beating from the mild December weather.

Many of the boarded rinks are now closed because of the rain and seasonably high temperatures of this past week. Some of the kids at the West Thunder Community Centre tried to play shinny on the skating pond instead Tuesday afternoon, but the ice was too patchy and wet.

City parks officials say they'll attempt to re-flood the rinks next week after the Christmas break, when temperatures are expected to drop.

Fortunately, the skating rink at Prince Arthur's Landing is still in good shape thanks to the ice plant, which keeps the rink frozen on warmer days.

The changeroom for the waterfront rink will be closed on Christmas Day, but it will be open for the rest of the holidays, with reduced hours on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
