Spike in transport crashes on highways concerns OPP

THUNDER BAY -- Provincial police are expressing concern over an apparent spike in collisions in the last six weeks involving transport trucks.

THUNDER BAY -- Provincial police are expressing concern over an apparent spike in collisions in the last six weeks involving transport trucks.

Officials with the OPP say this is an important time for drivers of large rigs to drive within the speed limit and to slow down when weather and road conditions deteriorate.

Police say they're continuing to see large trucks lose control and rollover due to drivers ignoring posted ramp speeds and other highway signage.

According to the latest stats, there have been more than 8,800 motor vehicle collisions involving transports on Ontario highways this year, including 505 in the Northwest Region.

Since Nov. 1 there have already been nearly 1,300 transport crashes around the province, and 81 in the Northwest.

As for fatal collisions this year, there have been 74 involving transports on Ontario highways, and six in this region.

However, local OPP officials do say all of those six fatal collisions were caused by the driver of the other vehicle, and not the driver of the rigs.
