THUNDER BAY -- A local legal aid organization is helping the city's less fortunate store their important documentation.

The Kinna-Aweya Legal Clinic on Cumberland Street South is housing an ID Bank.

Recently, Bay Credit Union donated a new fire proof cabinet to the clinic for people to leave their documents somewhere safe and accessible.

Director of Administration Beth Ponka says they noticed a need for some local residents who tend to move frequently, or who may have no fixed address.

She says people who are accessing social assistance qualify for the program.  And thus far, hundreds of people have signed up for the service.

You're no longer allowed to laminate your documents like your birth certificate, and Ponka says that leaves them more vulnerable to damage.

She adds that it's a relief for their clients to know they don't have to worry about where their documents are.
