THUNDER BAY -- Joe Moses hopes a new conference will create more opportunities for the region's business and Aboriginal communities to get together.

Moses, the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce's first ever Aboriginal chair of the board, said the Aboriginal community relies on the Thunder Bay and the region for everything from retail to support services.

"That's a huge contributing factor to our economic development here in Thunder Bay," Moses said at the chamber office Wednesday morning where the June Aboriginal Partnership exchange conference was announced.

The one-day conference, in partnership with the Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund, is looking to bring government, industry and communities together to find new opportunity.

"I'd like people to walk away from the event with questions and ideas and thoughts and dialogue to realize that these types of things don't just happen overnight," Moses said.  "We need to start the conversations and build the relationships."

NADF executive director Brian anytime you can bring people together helps create wealth.

"Those are beneficial to us because we're in the business of helping businesses succeed," he said.

Moses said it's a huge honour to be the first Aboriginal to take on the role of chair of the board for the chamber.

"It's a testament to where we've come as a chamber over the years towards wanting to be progressive," he said.
