THUNDER BAY -- Two people have died as a result of a Friday night crash on Oliver Road.

A man and woman, both 22, died at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash involving a sedan and an SUV that happened at about 9 p.m. in the Mapleward Road area. Police say it appears one of the drivers lost control of their vehicle.

The two were occupants of the sedan and were rushed to hospital after the collision with what police initially described as “critical injuries” while a third person, a 62-year-old woman who was in the SUV, suffered what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.

Both vehicles were destroyed.

Oliver Road was closed to traffic between Highgate Road and Burns Road for much of the night as investigators worked at the scene.

The identities of the victims are not being released, pending notification of next of kin.

The road was reopened to traffic early Saturday morning.

Thunder Bay Police Traffic Sgt. Glenn Porter said the investigation is ongoing.
