THUNDER BAY -- Police have identified the two people killed in a Friday night crash on Oliver Road.

Natasha Sue Campbell and Zachary Everett Huibers, both 22, died when the Honda Civic they were driving in collided with an SUV between Highgate and Burns roads at about 9 p.m.

The two were taken to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with what were described as critical injuries. They both died in hospital.

Campbell was from Barrie, Ont. and Huibers was from Belle Ewart, Ont. The two were in the process of moving to Thunder Bay from southern Ontario.

Huibers’ stepfather Carl Godin, who reached out via email, said the two were a couple who had fallen in love with Thunder Bay.

“They had moved here to start a new life with us, partnering in an agricultural enterprise, as well as continuing to develop their own skills and careers,” Godin said Monday.

“They spent the last two weeks with us, happy, excited and working toward these goals from the day they arrived.”

The couple had been staying with Godin and he said they were on their way to a nearby corner store at the time of the crash.

“We’re struggling to keep busy, images of laughing and smiling Zack and Tasha are still before my eyes, wishing they were still here with us,” Godin said.

Though police have not officially disclosed the cause of the collision, Godin said the couple’s car appears to have hit slush on the centre line while going around a turn and slid sideways into oncoming traffic.

Police previously said it appears one of the drivers lost control of their vehicle.

The 62-year-old driver of the SUV was treated for minor injuries and released from hospital.

The investigation continues.
